Laura Stevens (UK, 1977) is a photographic artist whose work explores the private self and the female gaze in narratives of transformation. In her quiet contemplative compositions, inhabited or empty, she illuminates a psychological state in her subjects. Using light, colour and gesture, the work is charged with an emotional quality and a distinct visual aesthetic. In both the still and moving image, she creates studies of vulnerability, solitude and intimacy through a darkly tender lens. Her work is regularly shown in museums, galleries and festivals internationally, including Galerie Miranda, Clampart Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery and Art Palm Beach. Internationale des Arts in Paris and CAMPO in Uruguay and was a finalist of the Prix HSBC pour la Photographie 2019. She received her BA from Leeds Metropolitan University and her MA from the University of Brighton.

ARTIST STATEMENT

The Other Side of Silence

The work is made from my time in Garzon spent following local gauchos with their horses. It is a commentary on the relationship between man and animal and the dynamics of power between species, particularly in this case of masculine control. In the video we study the horse in fragments, watching him breathe, reacting to the man’s proximity and to him being saddled. A minimalist study of the desire for connection, and the polarity between freedom and control.

El trabajo fue realizado en el tiempo que pasé en Garzón siguiendo a los gauchos locales con sus caballos. Es un comentario sobre la relación entre el hombre y el animal y la dinámica de poder entre las especies, particularmente en este caso del control masculino. En el video, estudiamos al caballo en fragmentos, viéndolo respirar, reaccionando a la proximidad del hombre y a que lo ensillen. Un estudio minimalista del deseo de conexión, y la polaridad entre libertad y control.
