Federico Ruiz Santesteban

Fede Ruiz Santesteban (Uruguay, 1981) began his training in photography and architecture at the same time at the end of the Nineties. Some years later, he abandoned the tasks linked to the traditional analog laboratory. In 2010 he began to explore alternative processes, focusing on sustainable, low-cost strategies. He sought to recover the fantastic act of developing images by his own means, exploring the photographic power of diverse materials that he finds in the surrounding environment. He is director and teacher of photography at Espacio Hiedra. Fede is an award-winning artist who has exhibited his work in galleries and museums in Uruguay and around the world.

Fede Ruiz Santesteban (Uruguay, 1981) comenzó su formación en fotografía y arquitectura al mismo tiempo a finales de los Noventa. Algunos años más tarde y debido a varios factores, entre ellos los altos costos de operación, abandonó las tareas vinculadas al tradicional laboratorio analógico. En 2010, comenzó a explorar procesos alternativos, centrándose en estrategias sustentables y de bajo costo. Buscó recuperar el fantástico acto de revelar imágenes por sus propios medios, explorando el poder fotográfico de diversos materiales que encuentra en el entorno. Es director y profesor de fotografía en Espacio Hiedra. Fede, artista premiado, ha expuesto su trabajo en galerías y museos de Uruguay y del mundo.

This project seeks to celebrate plants that, due to their characteristics, tend to be catalogued as “invasive.” I choose to leave this anthropocentric vision and understand them as species that break limits and boundaries. Species that insist on continuing to sprout with a stubborn, strong will. The proposal is inspired by the plants that are currently taking over the ruin. I also worked with other species that “invade” my garden and the town. I approach this homage through my own technique of photography without a camera – photogenic drawing – made with a photosensitive emulsion that I created using water collected from one of the town’s watering holes. These are processes inspired by 19th century formulas, reinterpreted under contemporary concepts such as sustainability, low cost, and links to the environment. Given the characteristics of the processes, such as the manufacturing of the emulsions, the resulting works will be just as uncertain as the times we are living in.

El proyecto que celebra a las plantas que por sus características suelen ser catalogadas como “invasoras”. Prefiero dejar esta visión antropocéntrica y entenderlas como especies que rompen límites y fronteras, especies que insisten en seguir brotando con voluntad terca y porfiada. La propuesta se inspira en las plantas que actualmente están tomando la tapera. También trabajé con otras especies que “invaden” mi jardín y el pueblo. He abordado este homenaje a través de una técnica propia de fotografía sin cámara — dibujo fotogénico — realizada con una emulsión fotosensible que ha sido fabricada utilizando agua recogida en una de las aguadas de Pueblo Garzón. Estos procesos son inspirados en fórmulas del siglo XIX reinterpretadas bajo conceptos contemporáneos como la sustentabilidad, el bajo costo, y el vínculo con el entorno. Dadas las características de los procedimientos, como de la fabricación de las emulsiones, las obras resultantes son tan inciertas como los tiempos que nos habitan.
